CASSIUS BLACKWOOD
The Character
Name: Cassius Blackwood
Nicknames: Cass
Gender: Male (currently female)
Age: 17
Race: Human (currently partial goat)
Rank: Commoner
Job: Guide/Scout, Adventurer, Troublemaker
Personality: Cass’s personality is a bit all over the place, much like his magical abilities. For the most part, Cass is sarcastic and expects the worst out of most creatures, but in secret he’s kind and hopes that most he thinks are bad are actually not. Because his magical abilities have kept others at bay for so long, he hasn’t developed a lot of social skills when dealing with sentient humanoid creatures. Animals he loves, and can seemingly communicate with them effortlessly, but other creatures are a different beast altogether. But he’s been known to tell humans to die as he’s casting his magic. He’s not seriously trying to kill them, but he just doesn’t like them too much.
For the most part, Cass isn’t really motivated to do much, but he has a hard time turning his back on those in need—especially if they are animals. He has a disdain for humanoid creatures because they act like they are owed everything around them, but that doesn’t mean he won’t help the defenseless among them if he so chooses.
Despite sometimes coming off as confident, Cass really doesn’t have much confidence at all—if he had a mantra, it’d be fake it ‘til you make it. Part of the reason why he doesn’t have much confidence is because his powers are volatile at times, and casting spells can be problematic. Like changing your sex and your race problematic. So being a half-goat female when you started out as a human male doesn’t exactly inspire a lot of sureness.
History: Cassius Blackwood was born to Dak and Moora Blackwood 17 years ago just outside of Ronresla. Cass’s mother was a wild magic user as well, but had long since given up on casting because of the chance of injuring her family. Still, the townsfolk of Ronresla were wary of her and anyone with the Blackwood name as there have been others in previous generations that had similar abilities and caused damage to the town. But since Moora wanted stable living conditions for her new child, her and her husband decided that she wouldn’t use magic again.
The problem with wild magic is it doesn’t necessarily care what your plans are. Every now and then, Moora had to contend with what is called a surge—a rush of wild magical energy. This surge was even harder to control if you weren’t using magic because you lose control little by little if you aren’t practicing. In the past, these surges amounted to minor altercations like turning a cat into a bird or setting a tree on fire. But as Cass grew older, they began to worsen.
It wasn’t until Cass was around 10 that his mother had a tremendous surge. The Blackwoods were in Ronresla celebrating a couple getting married. Moora had been drinking, and found herself in an argument with another patron of the ceremony. Without realizing it, her emotions built up enough wild magic to the point where she accidentally cast a spell—which happened to be the disappearance of 80% of all gold within a 60 foot area. Anyone that had gold on them found their satchel much lighter, as did the couple’s dowry that had been given to them.
The Blackwoods were removed from the town temporarily, but some called to sell off their possessions in order to repay what had been lost. The town decided against that action, but a few nights after that, a few townsfolk decided to sneak into the Blackwood residence and take what was owed. That was the night that Moora another surge of magical energy, but this time she became a fireball and exploded into nothing. People were thrown from the home, and although no one died, most were severely injured.
Years later, Cass realized that he had the same talent. His father, drowning himself in ale at that point, tried to force Cass to never use his power. But Cass’s curiosity got the best of him, and Dak ended up kicking him out of his home. And so Cass has spent the last few years wandering around, attempting to gain some sort of foothold on his powers. He hasn’t been as successful as he wants to be, hence why he’s a bit more antisocial than your normal teenager, but he’s trying to keep moving forward.
